The Drum

Mireille & Mathieu unpack their paraphernalia at a flea-market. Objects and toys they pick up turn out to be bursting with stories. These little scenes, gentle, poetic, cruel or comical, follow in quick succession. Within this happy delirium nothing is taken seriously, it’s a field of exploration, of absurd experiments… Uncomplicated, excessive, surrealistic Belgian humour bursts with delightful absurdities and hilarious scenes.

One of Belgium’s oldest and legendary absurdist companies made its Edinburgh debut as part of Big in Belgium 2017.

ARM was created in 2001 and toured extensively in Holland and Flanders. Since then it has been performed in France, Spain, Great Britain and Switzerland.

Kathleen Wijnen and Erik Bassier met each other during their studies at the art school in Ghent, Belgium. As photographer and graphic artist, their attention was gradually drawn towards theatrical and cinematographic projects which eventually resulted in a first collaboration in 1996.

This show has something really special about it. It’s fantastically funny and unique. It’s best described as 60 minutes of mayhem and mystery.

Manchester Evening News

Mireille et Mathieu had the public in fits with their spectacle ARM. They tackled the big issues of human relations, life, and death very humorously indeed.
