The Lyric

BAFTA award-winning Alistair McGowan stars as Henry Higgins in this major new revival in a centenary year production of Shaw’s enduring masterpiece directed by Tony award-winning David Grindley.

Pygmalion is one of theatre’s most entertaining and beguiling explorations of gender and class and is perhaps best known as the inspiration for the musical My Fair Lady. The aristocratic and pompous Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform the manners and speech of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle. Packed with a host of larger than life characters Pygmalion remains one of Shaw’s most popular plays and a classic British drama; full of his trademark wit, style and humour.

Alistair has established himself as a formidable actor in recent years receiving critical acclaim for several West End appearances including Little Shop of Horrors, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination. Rula Lenska, one of our leading stage and television actors (Calendar Girls, Coronation Street), will play Mrs Higgins and Jamie Foreman (Oliver Twist, EastEnders) will play Alfred Doolittle.

Alistair McGowan is outstanding…….shines in a show that does Shaw proud

For two and a half hours you think, you laugh, you feel, you admire. Shaw can be a struggle for modern audiences, but this is a corker

Pygmalion is 100 years old: Happy Birthday, dear Eliza
