Details

Coffee with Vera is a performative coffee morning that takes stories from the oldest Ashkenazi Synagogue in continuous use in the English-speaking world, in Plymouth. The character of Vera Jockleson, created from the female voices of the Plymouth congregation, co-hosts a coffee morning with Ruth and recounts how this form of social gathering was a monthly fund raising event for the Ladies Guild. Through Vera we hear of past events and stories from the Plymouth and Exeter Synagogues whilst at the same time Ruth tries to connect it with her own history by searching for possible Jewish relatives.

“Ruth Mitchell’s piece is subtly compelling; a moving meditation on identity and heritage that fuses tales from two South West synagogues with an investigation into her own family history.” – Belinda Dillon, Wildfire, Exeter

Winner of the Critic’s Choice Wildfire Award, Exeter Ignite 2014

About Forge

This July Theatre Royal Plymouth presents the first ever Forge season: seven experimental and exciting new pieces from both established and emerging theatre makers. A hopeless radio show, explorations of Jewish heritage, technological revolutions, tales of unemployment, a crazy week of Robin Thicke and ignoring your energy supplier: Forge is a unique opportunity to experience inventive new work in an intimate new venue.
