Narwhals back (Alright!) | Whey Down South

Posted by on

Returning to The Lab after forming through Theatre Royal Plymouth’s Lab Company programme last year, the Narwhal Ensemble are rolling out all the stops in their recently redeveloped debut show Whey Down South which is churning away nicely in The Lab all this week until Sat 14 Apr. We caught up with fellow Narwhal, Roxane, who shared what the company have been up to:

A little under a year ago we were about to perform Whey Down South for the first time in The Lab, now we are back with a new version!

If you are reading this and didn’t know, The Narwhal Ensemble was 2016/17s Lab Company – we spent a year in residency in The Lab space, training with many of the companies that visited the theatre and creating our debut show: Whey Down South (The rise then fall then rise then fall of the Little Curdlington cheese rolling).

We’ve been super busy since we left The Lab Company for the big wide world: we spent many an hour redeveloping Whey Down South, and we are all super proud of the show we now have. The story and themes we wanted to share and explore are still intact, but we are all very happy with this revamped version. For the people who saw us last June, don’t worry, we still have lots of moments you’ll remember (that fox is going nowhere).

We met lots of really interesting locals through Plymouth Libraries and workshops with Plymouth School of Creative Arts and Med theatre. A big thanks to everyone who shared stories with us about living in the South West – you’ve helped bring Little Curdlington a new spark of life (and some pathetic fallacy). We have also been touring around the South West, and were part of both the From Devon with Love and Theatre Fest West festivals.

Finally, we’ve started working on our next couple of show ideas. We are really excited about everything, and recently started playing around – so stay tuned!

So here we are, back in The Lab. As a company, we have spent so many hours in this room. It’s the room we went from strangers to a professional company. We are so very excited to be back – and we hope you can come join us in Little Curdlington between the 10th and the 14th of April to watch Jenny fight for her beloved cheese rolling festival.

See you soon,

Roxane
