Young Company: End of Summer Update

Posted by on

As we draw an end to the summer holidays, here is a look back at all of the exciting things that have happened during the summer months for the Young Company at the Theatre Royal Plymouth.

Playhouse – Little Criminals

Little Criminals

On Saturday 11th July the cast of Little Criminals performed on the Drum stage as part of the Playhouse Festival. The play, directed by Becky Huggins, was written by Evan Placey and focused on young fairytale characters and their day in court, answering for their crimes. The cast did a fantastic job, performed very well and had the audience laughing in the aisles. We would like to say a huge congratulations to those that took part, well done!

Immune

Immune cast

The Young Company highly anticipated production Immune was performed on the Drum stage Wednesday 19th – Saturday 22nd August. The play has been written as part of a unique partnership between Theatre Royal Plymouth, Royal & Derngate and West Yorkshire Playhouse. It was a yearlong process working with the writer, Oladipo Agboluaje, and the partner theatres to develop ideas and for each young company to produce the play over the summer. The Young Company cast and crew rehearsed for two weeks at TR2 and then a week in The Drum with director Tim Bell. The cast performed astounding and had worked very hard throughout the whole process. They were supported by a brilliant crew and technical team who had a huge task of creating a comic book design with live video on stage. We would like to say a huge congratulations and well done to all of those involved.

Summer Stakeout

Play in a Week

During the first three weeks of the summer holidays we ran our Summer Stakeout programme, offering workshops for 3 to 25 year olds. Musical Theatre Academy, Play in a Week, Storytelling Family Workshops and YC Create Play in a Week took place in The Lab and at Our Production and Learning Centre, TR2. Young people and their families learnt lots of new drama skills, techniques, made lots of new friends, and had a fun time too! Some groups even got to perform a showback to friends and family as part of their week too. For lots of information about our holiday activities coming up at Halloween and Christmas, please see our one-off workshops page.

The Paper Birds Summer School – YC Hubs

Hubs - Paper Birds

Acclaimed touring theatre company The Paper Birds led a week long summer school for young people involved with our Young Company Hubs Drama and Dance groups, which take place in schools in and around Plymouth. The company worked with 15 young people who regularly take part in the term time sessions and created a performance based on growing up. The group explored the impressions of running the world in today’s society and what would happen if young people were in charge! The performance took place in The Lab and was utterly brilliant and well performed by those taking part.
