#TRPLive Backstage at Shrek The Musical

Posted by on

Yesterday we live tweeted from backstage in The Lyric for Shrek The Musical. It is rare to have Access All Areas to a production of this scale and to show you behind the scenes was a real treat which we grabbed with both hands. Before the show we headed out to see the audience in anticipation for the show. We bumped into Melissa, one of the Theatre’s excellent Catering Assistants, who has been dressing up as Princess Fiona and getting pictures with excited children during weekday and Saturday matinees. Today was no exception as she was quickly surrounded by families with cameras out!

Beginners’ calls were made and the cast get ready…

The curtain comes up and Shrek appears…

From side of stage you see the actors in ways you would never see them otherwise. Here we see Farquaad’s knights entering and leaving the stage…

DULOC!

There are so many costumes for this production that there is a costume VILLAGE. Honestly, it is huge and is as long as the stage is wide…

As Shrek and Donkey head to the castle to rescue Princess Fiona we managed to get some great shots of Shrek, Donkey and the Dragon (who looks like she is coming for us!)…

Costume changes are extremely quick with 23 actors playing a total of 115 characters. The fastest change is made by Nikki who played Princess Fiona who has to change to an Ogre in just FIFTY seconds!

With so much going on backstage it is important that we don’t get in the way. Fortunately Stage Manager Jen not only lets us know where to move but also points out the most exciting parts for us to capture.

‘Fly your freak flag!’

And when it is all over, the costumes are all returned ready for the next performance….

We hope to bring you more backstage insight for future productions at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. Which show would you love to see behind the scenes of? Let us know in the comments below!

Shrek The Musical is showing until Saturday 15th August. Book your tickets online or by calling 01752 267222.
