We have already reached half term break for the summer term, and what a fantastic start we have had! Here are a few highlights from the half term, and a few things to look forward to as well.
Immune – Auditions are now open!
This year’s summer production will be Immune by Oladipo Agboluaje and Young Company members can now apply to audition to be part of the cast or stage management team of this explosive new show. Auditions will be taking place on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th June at our Production and Learning centre, TR2, and The Lab. The play has been written as part of a unique partnership between the Theatre Royal Plymouth, Royal and Derngate and West Yorkshire Playhouse. The script was developed by young people from all three theatres and each theatre will produce the play over the summer. Our production will be directed by Tim Bell and will be performed on The Drum stage.
The Accordion Shop – National Theatre Connections
Nine members of the Young Company took part in a rehearsed reading as part of the NT Connections Festival in The Drum on Wednesday 15th April. The group performed Cush Jumbo’s The Accordion Shop which was directed by Tim Bell, who will be directing the summer production Immune. The cast did a fantastic job and performed brilliantly and professionally. They worked with Tim for just 6 hours before the festival, and were filling in for a school who unfortunately had to drop out at the last minute. A big well done and congratulations to them!
Stuff and Nonsense Workshop
On Tuesday 19th May Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company ran a unique one-off workshop for Young Company members aged 8-11 year olds. The workshop took place in The Lab, our rehearsal space at the theatre with Niki McCretton, puppeteer and creator of the company. The workshop looked at the basics of puppetry; characterisation and tricks on how to bring the puppet to life. The group then got to experiment with the puppets within the workshop. It was great fun and everyone had a fantastic time.
Directing Theatre Workshop
This term we have been running a Directing Theatre workshop for Young Company members aged 15-21. The workshop was led by the Theatre’s Assistant Director, Phil Bartlett, in The Lab for five weeks. The group focused on The Ugly One by Marius von Mayenburg and even gave other YC members the opportunity to come in as actors for the aspiring directors. The workshops looked at all styles of directing, dissecting the text and bringing the rehearsal room to life. We have loads of fantastic one-off and short courses available throughout the year, so please keep checking back.
On Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May we held auditions for the Young Company Summer Production Little Criminals. The production will be performed in The Drum on Saturday 11th July as part of Playhouse and will be directed by Rebecca Huggins. The cast of 23 have only just started work on this fantastic script, by Evan Placey. The Young Company Design group have designed and will build the set for the production too. We can’t wait to see what the group have been up to during their week of intensive rehearsals this half term.
