Welcome to our first Young Company newsletter to keep you up to date with all the news and opportunities this autumn.
We believe that one of the most important ways to build you skills in theatre is to see theatre so this term we’ve arranged a few trips for groups to see some of the exciting shows on our stages. So far the YC 15+ Acting and Design groups had the opportunity to see Grand Guignol, a comedy horror which showcased amazing writing and performances with technical wizardry to create gory special effects. We also took the YC 13-15 Acting group to see Free written by David Lane who has previously written two shows for the Young Company, Epiphany and Blood Tie. YC 5-7 Acting will be seeing Goldilocks and the Three Bears and YC Dance 8-12 will be seeing Edward Scissorhands. Look out for more trips in the new year so that you all get the chance to see inspiring theatre!
New Staff Director
Our new Staff Director Lee Hart joined us in September. Lee is the second director to take on the role and we are excited about the new ideas he is bringing to us. He has spent most of his career as an actor and director and brings a wealth of experience to the role. This term he is working with the YC 11-13 and 15+ Acting groups, and also on a number of our community projects. One of Lee’s passions is devising and creating new work which gives us lots of exciting opportunities for the Young Company shows this year!
Year of Dance
Plymouth is hosting the national annual youth dance festival U.Dance in July which we will be heavily involved with. In the lead up to this festival we want to make sure that there are lots of opportunities for young people to get involved in dance so we have invited Alex Hocking to be our Dance Coordinator. Alex already leads the YC 8-12 Dance group and one of our Young Company Hubs dance groups at Marine Academy Plymouth. Following her role as Dance Ambassador on the recent production of Lord of the Flies with Matthew Bourne, Alex has launched a boy’s dance group. We are keen to start a group for young people aged 13+ so if you are interested in this please email Alex at email@example.com.
Auditions – The Half Girl
We are delighted to announce the next Young Company production, The Half Girl. This will be a brand new play devised by the cast and directed by Lee Hart. We will be taking inspiration from mythical journeys as we create the world of a young girl on a quest to find her father. The call out for auditions will come out very shortly so keep an eye out, we will be looking to cast a group of 15-20 11 to 16 year olds in January. The show will be performed from the 8-11th April in The Drum!
In other news…
- Congratulations to Ebren Purchall and Josephine Pumffrey who successfully auditioned to be in 1984 which was on The Lyric stage in September!
- Congratulations to Bailey Cameron on successfully auditioning to play the role of Michael in Elf the Musical. He will be performing during both the Theatre Royal Plymouth and the Dublin runs of the show!
