Jenny Deakin, a long standing People’s Company member, talks about her experiences and the opportunities that have opened up to her as a result of being a part of the theatre group. Now rehearsing for a role in Love and Information, Jenny reflects on the rehearsal process, the importance of direction and the anticipation of production week!
“I first decided to join the People’s Company in 2003 because I had heard that amateur Company members enjoyed the benefits of being taught by professional practitioners with their “rich tapestry” of experiences. What a wonderful opportunity that was for someone like me, and although I have only participated in one previous production with the Company, and a few workshops, I have always felt that I have been treated as a fellow professional and been inspired and motivated not only by facilitators but also by my fellow actors.
In attending a workshop run by Beth Shouler, Director of Love and Information prior to being notified about auditions, I was struck by Beth’s professionalism, commitment and the dedication she applied to the workshop process. A key reason for auditioning for the Love and Information production was because I was confident that Beth would expect us to perform to the very best of our abilities.
It has been a privilege to work with the Company so far! From the outset Beth has demonstrated a steadfastness of intent and total focus on doing justice to Caryl Churchill’s explosive and fragmentary exploration of the human condition in all its glories and frailties.
The rehearsal process has been well constructed with rigorous physical and vocal warm up exercises guaranteed to blast any lurking lethargy to smithereens and to create actors who are as physically and vocally as fit for the rehearsal process as possible. I can only speak for myself, but I always feel warmly welcome and included in our Company. It is a lovely feeling. There are always ‘positive vibes’ around even though the pressure is mounting as we approach production week!
I have found rehearsals to be invigorating and rich experiences. Thank you People’s Company. Long may you thrive!”
