The Theatre Royal Plymouth is involved in a project that will transform Royal William Yard into a whole new world for the opening of The World At Your Feet.
Tons of sand, hundreds of paper swallows, an array of vintage teacups and two hundred secondhand suitcases have made their way down to the Melville building in Royal William Yard ready for the opening this evening.
This spectacular piece of outside dance/theatre is the centre piece of Plymouth’s Cultural Olympiad and everyone who comes along to see the show will be taken on an extraordinary and unforgettable journey.
The audience’s luggage is packed and waiting at the Mayflower Steps – like the Pilgrim Fathers they will be taken on a journey to a new world – one where everything is not what it first seems. Imagine with passport in hand travelling by boat or vintage bus along Plymouth’s spectacular waterfront to your new life in a new land at the Royal William Yard that will have been transformed into a new topsy-turvy world.
This collaborative production has been inspired by over a hundred real stories of real people’s personal experiences of making Plymouth their home. It is a celebration of the richness and texture that migration can and does bring to a city.
Plymouth City Council Cabinet member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Peter Smith said: “This is going to be a truly memorable event with our incredible waterfront – including the Royal William Yard – playing parts in this performance. Over 1,200 of Plymouth’s young people have been involved in some way or other in making this happen. It’s been a great experience for them and we hope the event will be a great experience for the audience. Don’t take my word for it. Buy a ticket and see for yourself!”
Internationally acclaimed writer Peter Oswald has worked alongside a creative team from across the arts organisations involved, including young people, people of colour, refugees and migrant workers, in order to create this piece of unique and eye-opening theatre that is directly drawn out of real life stories.
Over two thousand young people and members of the wider community have been involved in the development of this vast city wide project which has included three major elements; The World at Your Feet Youth Dance Schools Tour, The World At Your Feet Big Dance Weekend on 14th and 15th July and finally a brand new commissioned outdoor dance and theatre performance.
Some of the major arts organizations in Plymouth have worked together to make this project possible, including Attik Dance, Barbican Theatre, Plymouth Music Zone and Plymouth Dance as well as the Theatre Royal Plymouth, in collaboration with Plymouth City Council.
