The Theatre Royal Plymouth’s playing a key role in a new tour of Fela!, an award winning Broadway musical starting its tour in the city.
It tells the true story of Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician who was inspired by his mother, a civil rights campaigner, to defy a corrupt and oppressive military government and devote his life to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.
The musical is a joyous and uplifting celebration of his life, with a large company of dancers and musicians, plus a new set and props built at TR2, the Theatre Royal’s Production Centre.
Jason Steen, the project draughtsman said, “The energy is going to hit people because of the music and dancing – it’s going to be a real spectacle, and we’re already getting a sense of that just through building the set.”
The set has provided a new challenge for the team at TR2, because UV paint is being used to create visual special effects. It’s the first time they’ve used UV paint and light in such a sophisticated way, and Plymouth audiences will be among the first to see the results when the show opens on 2 June.
The show has already been a success on Broadway, in London and in Lagos, but these were all on permanent sets. The set being constructed at TR2 is designed to tour. After its exclusive dates at the Theatre Royal, the new set will be taken to Holland before returning to the UK for its run at Sadlers Wells in London.
Fela! is at the Theatre Royal from Thursday 2 – Saturday 4 June.
