Details

Danza Contemporanea de Cuba was founded in 1959 and has since become the nation’s flagship contemporary dance troupe with a hybrid, hothouse style that is a pungent blend of African Caribbean rhythms, jazzy American modernism and inflections from European ballet.

Danza Contemporanea de Cuba have for 50 years produced dancers of the highest level with a style evoking the sensual, mystical and raw heart of Cuban spirit. Collaborations with international leaders in dance have combined with the Afro Caribbean and Spanish fusions to produce an electrifying, evocative and distinctly unique expression of all that is Cuban.

★★★★ “An exotic hybrid of contemporary, classical and Caribbean styles.”
The Guardian

★★★★ “Drop-dead gorgeous, performed in such perfect synch, and with such sexy intensity, that you can’t tear your eyes away.”
The Telegraph

Running time 2hr 10mins approx with two 20 min intervals | This production contains partial nudity.

Repertoire

Reversible – Choreography by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (30 minutes)
Hot Cuban passions, sass and wit all meet in Reversible by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. It delves deep into the path of gender matters, sudden changes in relationships, the games, rivalry and pleasure of being opponents and dissidents.

The Listening Room – Choreography by Theo Clinkard (30 minutes)
The Listening Room is a celebration of expressive and instinctive dancing. As the performers in headphones respond to an alternate soundtrack of wildly diverse music and text, the piece invites the audience to create their own relationships between what they hear and what they see.

Matria Etnocentra – Choreography by George Céspedes (30 minutes)
Matria Etnocentra by the company’s resident choreographer and dancer George Céspedes sees 23 dancers moving to a drill-like rhythm in this award-winning work. It is an exciting group piece that portrays the tension between the fluidity of music and dance and the regimented nature of daily life in Cuba.
