World War 1 Exhibition

Posted: 19 February 2009

In conjunction with the production FOR KING & COUNTRY there will be an exhibition of propaganda from World War I, which will take place on the Mezzanine from Mon 23 Feb > Mon 02 Mar.

Reception and Remembrance:  images and text generated in response to the First World War.

This exhibition illustrates the binary tension between history and memory through a consideration of how the British public responded to images and texts generated by World War I. In art historical terms this is referred to as Reception Theory. It examines how the general public received the object or objects under consideration at the time, as well as responses made by subsequent generations to those objects. This is contrasted with notions of memory, which we may refer to as Remembrance.
