Martin Dutton

The Theatre Royal Mezzanine Gallery Plymouth is delighted to present this solo exhibition centred on Parallel Themes of the recent works of Martin Dutton SWAc.

Martin is well established in the South West Academy of Art. He is currently President of Teignmouth Art Society, vice-President of the Devon Art Society and a committee member of Torbay Guild of Artists. He Exhibits regularly and also holds Open Studios and Private viewings in his Cellar Gallery at his Georgian home in Maindencombe.

Most recently drawn back to his interest in Abstraction, we see examples in this exhibition of his love of 'the physical handling of paint' to create colours, shapes and textures which combine into visual poetry, as seen in Regatta, Grand Canal and Regal Encounter. In the Dartmoor theme, his use of media and expressive colour embraces the legend and spiritual nature of the moor's stone walls, broad landcape, and sky, as beautifully conveyed in, Pathway to the Moon and Spirit of the wall. Our eyes are then drawn into the symbolism and sumptuous landscapes of Martin's Still life/Land-Seascapes, such as the mysterious, Knight Game and the glowing, Morning light, Provence.

And then, how willingly we enter those cornfields and sunflowers bathed in colour and light presented in the expressive In-Situ Landscapes such as the spacious Dodogne filed of gold and Shadows across the ripening corn.

This is an exhibition that draws us in to its themes and we are the richer, uplifted and made curious by our visit.
